It’s a Big Thing!

Moving homes is well known to be up there on the list of stressful life events. Renovating your home should be on this list. When I meet a couple, and they have been through a renovation together, there is always a little wink they give each other, like a badge of honor. Was it worth it? They always say – “absolutely”! They also say it was a big learning curve for them.

Design Rush!

People react to living in a construction zone or having to live temporarily away from home differently. Everyone will feel uneasy at some point. It’s essential to be aware of this before starting a project. However, it’s also important to enjoy it. It’s a significant life event, yes, but one that will bring a renewed vitality to your life as well renewed connection between family and friends. Creating on this big of a scale is a rush. If your kids think painting is fun, wait till they get a load of this! Point being, your family, is not going to experience this type of thing often – so enjoy.

Happy Accidents!

Murphy Law of Design – if something can go wrong, it will. Design is first and foremost problem-solving on how to get an idea in your imagination and actualize this vision in real life. The road to this vision is never without unexpected occurrences. It is crucial to have excellent communication, a good plan, and a realistic budget (with a safety padding) but also realize that being flexible and creative is necessary. It is all part of the process. In design, there is an inherent tension between function and aesthetic, and it is a seasoned designer job to help navigate you through this. Some of the best designs I have seen in my work, and my fellow designers have been what I like to call “happy accidents.” When stuff happens, there is always a solution, and it is almost always better than the original idea. Trusting the creative process, even if it feels uncomfortable, will get you a better outcome than expecting everything to work out just as you envisioned in your mind at the beginning of the project.

Renovations and “Happy Accidents”.
